There are some interesting things going on with Palm-oriented
technologies. http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com has some pretty cool stuff
with Modal and TSpaces, AvantGo (http://www.avantgo.com) and ProxyWeb
(URL got lost) both offer the Palm interface. Your choices are now to
use packet, ISP, a combination, cell phone... your idea here.
I'm working up some stuff to allow me to download weather and map info
while out on the road on my Harley. That and a GPS (which I also have)
and I'll know every gas stop and H-D dealer along the trail. Next is to
generate a Palm-based database of repeaters that have phone-patch and/or
packet capability.

Subject: MFJ to TMV7A cable
I have a Kenwood TMV7A and an MFJ 1270C TNC. I purchased the MFJ
-5060 cable since the salesman said it would work. Heck, it doesn't
even come close to fitting the Kenwood recessed jack. I did some
"whittlling" and finally got it to fit. It receives data okay, but it
will not key the radio. The TMV7A manual is vague about the pinout of
the 6-pin DIN jack. It doesn't even list PTT. Any help or ideas out
there? Tnx & 73's.

Depends on how capable you are. Most people do not need help.
Plug RS-232 Cable from TNC into Computer.
Plug TNC cable into radio (after wiring it).
Plug radio into antenna.

Yes -- definitely. Don't try it yourself. (kidding) There are a lot of
great books on the subject of VHF that you should take the time to read
and plenty of info on packet and other digital modes that are available.
Do your self a favor and do your homework, develop a good idea of what
you expect to take away from the amateur radio community, and even
consider what you're prepared to give back. Find a club or school or
both that is active in AR and learn from the experienced folks out here
who have been at it a while.
Ham radio is a bit different from the on-line experience where one has
time to think out and compose one's thoughts. Radio is real time and has
evolved into a media of conversation. If you find you are not good at
chatting it up in a group of people you may find you have the same
problems on the air. Don't be discouraged by it but do spend a lot of
time listening and learning the ropes, and finally, have a good time.
One thing to remember is that radio is not packet and packet is not
radio (substitute your favorite digital mode). What this means is you
have to learn both to really "fit" into the community. And you know, it
really is a lot of fun.
