And along that line, does anyone have the calibration info for a 1270B? Have
one here that's been 'golden screw-drivered' beyond use (Hey, it was cheap!).
Seems to function fine - just needs the 'screwed' pots set right.
I found the 1270C instructions (MFJ web site) but haven't looked close enough
to risk using them on a 1270C.
Suggestions?

Subject: NEWBIE: How to get onto packet radio with no knowledge...
Hello,
I know it' rude to send this kind of post to a newsgroup but i'm at my
wits end. A few days ago Me and my friend were trying to think of a method
to network 2 houses together (next street) our inquiries soon turned to
wireless lans with large ranges (2 miles) and that's when I stumbled across
packet radio. Our networking idea is no longer an option but i'm very
curious about packet radio. The way I understand it so far (after quite a
lot of research) is that people with HAM licences link their PC to a radio
(via a TNC???? and a modem) and then communicate at relitively low speeds
(300bps-9600bps) in a manner reminiscant of a dialup BBS. From reading a lot
of posts I ge the impression that the sort of hardware needed is fairly
low-tech now (C128s and Apple IIs!!) and so i'm sure my Win98 box is up to
it.
Now, what I need to know is:
what exactly do i need to get into packet radio (equiptment, licences etc.)
how much will this equiptment cost (i'm on a very tight budget)
who/what exactly will i be communicating with (SE London area, UK)
how much will this equiptment cost (i'm on a very tight budget)
will I have to errect a massive Antenna in my Garden?
Can you get TCP/IP packets to the internet via packet (just for smtp, nmtp
etc. , not HTTP) - if so, is this legal/does it cost money?
P.S. If it helps, i've got n old CB radio (don't laugh) [model: Harvard
402MBA] could I salvage some parts from this? (areal, transformer etc.)
I would REALLY appreciate any help and will be very gratefull for any
information you can give me/point me to. I'm sure there's a FAQ out there
somewhere aimed at someone like me (who want to know the basics) all i need
is to find it!
Thank You,
-

Hello,
You will need to get a license.
If you have a computer, all you need is
a radio.
No Massive antenna needed.
Estimated cost: $250-$1,000,000 depending on the setup.
You can get the program to TCP/IP, and use packet radio from
http://www.forthnet.gr/sv2agw/
Hope this helped.
