Review of Warpstock Europe 2000 in Karlsruhe, Germany
Yesterday, Rolf (DL4SKF) and me visited Warpstock Europe Exhibition 2000
in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Warpstock is an exhibition about OS/2 and devices around. (see www.warpstock.de)
At Warpstock Europe in Karlsruhe, there were commercial exhibitors like
SUN (StarOffice), Lexmark or Softwaredistributor like Mensys (www.mensys.nl)
and more as well as non-commercial exhibitors showing their projects
(Cinema/2, Secure/2, etc etc) but also helpdesks and Team-OS/2-Clubs from
whole Germany.
The lectures taking place there were hold in english because the visitors
also came from abroad.
Some examples of lectures there:
-Visions and reality of wireless communication with OS/2 (wireless LAN, 2.4GHz)
-32bit Windows working under OS/2 - Project ODIN
-creating PDFs with OS/2
-porting programs from Linux to OS/2
-Warpzilla
-OS/2-Device drivers
-making bootable CDROMS for OS/2
-use of external devices with LotusNotes (i.e. PalmPilot etc)
-OS/2 in integrated devices - where you will not suppose that OS/2 is running
there
and more more more.....
At the helpdesks and Devicedriversection there were lots of skilled stuff
giving information about questions concerning OS/2.
One great show was when I saw MS-Office2000 running in a Window on the WARP4
Desktop ! It was working stable and fast - unbelievable.
The trick was the following:
This exhibitor showed a program how to connect the WARP-Client with another
Client running WIN via Network. In the examble above, the connection was via
ISDN and a server in another town, 200km from Karlsruhe.
On your WARP-Desktop you could see and control the programs running on the
remote computer.
The advantage is: Only one WIN-Computer for Windows applications, all the
others are running under reliable WARP. If a windowsession is crashing - simply
the window has to be closed but your workingsystem stays stable!
One very interesting lecture was held by www.innotek.de (the ones who brought
out the free FLASH-Plugin for Netscape) telling that it is still a very good
deal using OS/2 i.e. at developping embedded systems.
There was also shown, that at special and critical things still OS/2 is used -
and *NOT* MS-windows. (i.e. at ATM, banques, Airlines, car manufacturer and
Set-Top-boxes (!), etc).
At the booth of Team-OS/2-Trier-Germany you could buy all the TeamOS/2-CDs
including the newest one (Volume 7, 10/2000). The Team-OS/2-Trier-CDs (TTC)
are CDs published several times a year including new software for OS/2,
Fixpacks, etc - things you can find at servers like hobbes etc.)
The CD is always quite cheap - less than 8 Euros - so a very good work is done
there for supplying WARP-users with actual informations and software.
One disadvantage is, that the userguide is only available in German for the
moment and the fixpacks are only german and english - depending on the software
choice for filling up the CD-ROM.
For the next edition, I proposed them to include more HAM-Software on the
CD-ROM because there's plenty of this now available but too few people know
of this (i.e. the famous PacketRadio-Program FLEXPACKET/2 which is also
available in an english Version).
ok, as a summary, it was very interesting visiting this event and also great
getting informations from first hand.
I will include now a list of interesting Webpages (no garantee that I forgot
one...hi):
http://www.teamos2.ipcon.de (here you can order the TTCs)
http://www.os2.org
http://www.lks.net/~davidson/ (here you find HAM-Software for OS/2)
http://members.aol.com/hestoeck/index.html (here you'll find Flexpacket/2)
