The Trans-India Ocean dream
There are a number of VK6 radio amateurs who monitor the VHF propogation
charts in the hope that one day they a new world distance record will be
achieved with a contact to South Africa.
Wally Howse VK6KZ says some years ago there were a suggested reception
report of VK6 from Reunion Island - a distance of about 6000 kms.
The current world's tropospheric record for 144MHz is between Hawaii and
California, and a VK contact with Reunion Island, South Africa or Malagay
would beat that distance by more than 2,000 kms.
Wally VK6KZ said there is an omni directional beacon on 144.460MHz in Perth
as well as one with a beam on South Africa from Bunbury on 144.560MHz.
Putting a beacon on the French outpost of Reunion Island has not happened
due to the need for a suitable site, and difficult licensing arragements.
Who knows, it may happen one way with good will on both sides of the Indian
Ocean
