THE BEST NEWS YOU'LL HEAR ALL WEEK

QNEWS - ALL OF THE NEWS ALL OF THE TIME LISTEN TO IT ON SEG 3
on the WIA WEB PAGE on wia.org.au/vk4
Chris Edmondson VK4AA with the 'word' again this week...
To avoid confusion QNEWS only lists contests from:-
Contest Managers themselves, the WIA and Radio Amateurs of Canada
and does not necessarily endorse, support or vouch for the accuracy
of the information provided.
Major events to come this month are:-
15-16 ARRL International CW DX Contest
22-23 ZL Jock White Memorial Field Day.
This weekend's contests include the
Dutch PACC contest, CW and SSB and also the RSGB 160m CW Contest.
Next weekend, the ARRL CW contest will be held on the
15th and 16th over 48 hours from midnight Friday and the SSB leg
takes place two weeks later on March 1st and 2nd.
These are the ideal contests for anyone working towards their Worked All
States Award.
The CQ-WW SSB 160m contest is on February the 22nd and 23rd together with the
REF SBB and the UBA CW Contests. Also on the weekend of February 22/23
between 0200-1100 & 1700-0200 UTC you can take part in the
ZL 2003 Jock White Memorial Field Day.
Minimum contact numbers to qualify are 50 phone or 25 CW.
Finally and just before Mal, VK6LC pops in, a look at the
International Museums Weekend which takes place on the
weekend of the 14th and 15th of June.
A great number and variety of museums are again expected to take part.
Those stations wishing to join in with a museum special event station
of their own, should register free via the form on the IMW website.
You've tuned QNEWS, and now on the Q, WIA FEDERAL AWARDS MANAGER VK6LC Mal.
The DXCC or (Dx Century Club award).
This is a real challenge and can be claimed at 100 countries worked.
It's extensions can last for life time in Amateur Radio and a chance
to meet others with the same interest.
The DXCC program is very large and at the moment we have 335 countries
available.
One of the greatest things in the hobby I enjoy is attending Ham Fests,
meeting and discussing DX.
Your QSL cards can also be used for many other overseas awards from
other Radio Leagues and Societies.
Many new and older Hams enjoy this program to test their new equipment
or newly constructed antennas. They like myself are always trying to
improve to confirm that new rare DXCC station.
In Australia we also have famous DXCC hams, at anytime they may be able
to help you get started.
The operating modes all have been expanded to cater for all the
digital persons and the extended frequencies up to 2m. Just look at the
bloke from Far North Queensland, just recently John clocked in 137 countries
on 50mhz. Struth!! if he can do it! so can you?
This award is also an education in geography and nationalities, it's
a real interest to track these far away Countries and a good way of
meeting overseas friends and locating them all on a world map.
QSL cards are received and sent via your local division QSL Buro and
direct method by post if applicable.
Some of the more rare countries, I send direct to exchange for colourful
stamps, and also I have a beautiful collection, maybe that's another
interest for you.
There are two smart email DXCC management documents with "pop help"
for prefixes and dates etc, this will assist you to maintain your awards.
Its so simple just fill the blank spaces and email it off to us.
We also feature progress updates, in our AR. Magazine several times a year.
This broadcast has only covered the basic details.
Further information can be requested from the Federal Awards Manager:
P.O.Box. 196, Cannington. Western Australia. 6987. or
via Email: awards@wia.org.au
or our W.I.A National website. http://www.wia.org.au
Stay tuned to QNEWS next week for our "Antarctic award".
This has been another Federal Awards update 2003.
This is Mal. VK6LC for QNEWS, in Perth.

Argentina has become the latest country to acquire LF privileges for
radio amateurs on the 136kHz band.
The first operation was reportedly by LW2ETU on Christmas Day 2002.
Earlier, Arnie Coro, CO2KK, reported that Cuban radio amateurs may
soon have access to the band, while last summer, Marcus Ramos, PY3CRX,
wrote that the Brazilian telecommunications authority approved use of
the band for amateurs on a secondary basis.
Paraguay and Uruguay have also expressed support for amateur use
of this LF band.
