The frequency of Sputnik 1 was no secret. I monitored it for several
months using a hastily constructed converter into my amateur receiver. The
antenna was nothing wonderful - a 4/4 yagi at about 40 feet.The
transmission was in the 40 meg band. Any amateur could have built a simple
converter to listen to the signals.
