Three VLT UT1 Photos and a Viewgraph
Here are some recent wide-angle photos of the first 8.2-m VLT Unit
Telescope (UT1) with FORS1 and ISAAC attached. Regular observations
with these astronomical instruments are scheduled to start from April
1, 1999.
In addition, a new viewgraph is shown that is useful for illustration
of future observational possibilities with the many different VLT
instruments. It indicates the various epochs and types of objects
that may be reached with these new and powerful facilities.
For the most recent news about the VLT Project, please look at the
VLT Information webpage.
ESO Press Photo 05a/99
This wide-angle view of VLT UT1 was obtained with a 6x6 cm
photographic camera and a fisheye lens, resulting in some
unavoidable distortion. (Photo obtained in December 1998).
ESO Press Photo 05b/99
A "vertical" view of the UT1 was combined from several electronic
photos. The FORS1 instrument (yellow) is well visible at the
bottom of the M1 mirror cell. (Photo obtained in December 1998).

The central part of UT1 is shown is this wide, "horizontal" view,
also combined from several electronic images. The ISAAC instrument is
installed on the Nasmyth platform to the left. (Photo obtained in
December 1998).
