GNSS EDUCATION AND AWARENESS WORKSHOP -GENOA, 26-29.10.1998
Europe launches european education and awareness campaign for a global
navigation satellite system.
The first in a series of multi-modal education and awareness workshops
for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) took place in the town
of Santa Margherita Ligure, close to Genoa, in Italy this week. It is in
response to the large and growing interest in GNSS and its potential for
improving safety and efficiency in transport and providing benefits to
other sectors worldwide.
The workshop programme was designed by experts from the European
Tripartite Group, ETG, (comprising the European Community, the European
Space Agency and the European Organisation for the Safety of Air
Navigation - EUROCONTROL). The role of ETG is to develop and implement
Europe's regional contribution to GNSS. The European Tripartite Group is
being assisted in the production and delivery of the education and
awareness programme by two specialised European GNSS research institutes
at the University of Nottingham in the UK and the University of the
Federal Armed Forces in Munich, Germany. This is the first in a series
of workshops to be presented to GNSS stakeholders in Europe and beyond.
The importance of satellite navigation in Europe is growing in all modes
of transport and will benefit industry through the opening of new
markets. The aim of the workshop was to raise the awareness of potential
decision-makers, regulators and service providers of the full scope of
the on-going activities in Europe. It addressed comprehensively the
technical, operational, regulatory and institutional issues associated
with satellite navigation. This workshop was tailored specifically for
decision-makers and senior management. The participants were drawn
widely from throughout Europe and represented government departments,
international organisations and associations as well as potential GNSS
service providers. Future workshops will focus on industry and users.
Mr Franco Malerba (PPE/FI), Member of the European Parliament and of the
local government of Genoa, introduced the workshop and delivered the
key-note address on behalf of the European Tripartite Group. Mr Malerba,
a former astronaut, has been involved in the development of a European
strategy for GNSS and acted as rapporteur to the European Parliament's
Committee for external economic relations on the Commission's
Communication on GNSS.
Mrs Brigitee Langenhagen (PPE/CDU), Member of the European Parliament
and rapporteur of the Parliament's Transport Committee for GNSS will
also participate in the workshop. In her capacity as chairperson of the
session on GNSS-2 and the European Strategy for future GNSS, she will
report on the European Parliament's position concerning the Commission's
Communication on GNSS.
