PLAYALINDA BEACH TO CLOSE FOR SHUTTLE LAUNCH
Playalinda Beach will be closed to the public beginning Saturday,
Oct. 24, due to the planned launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery on Mission
STS-95. Given a successful launch on Thursday, Oct. 29, the beach will
reopen to the public at 6 a.m. the following day.
The countdown leading to the 92nd Space Shuttle flight begins at 8
a.m. Monday, Oct. 26. Safety and security concerns require that Playalinda
Beach be closed to the public throughout the Shuttle launch countdown.
Launch of Discovery is set for 2 p.m. EST on Thursday.
Other Canaveral National Seashore beaches, such as Apollo Beach,
will not be affected by the referenced closing and will remain open during
Discovery's launch. Access to these beaches is through New Smyrna Beach.
