JOINT ESA/CNES/ARIANESPACE INFORMATION NOTE

ARIANE 503 PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR THE PRESS

For the Ariane 503 launch currently scheduled for 20 October 1998, ESA,
CNES and Arianespace will be making arrangements to assist the press
covering events in Guiana and Europe.

As for flight 502, the Guiana Space Centre facilities in Kourou will be
limited by the available technical and logistical capacity. For this
reason, a European Press Centre will once again be set up by ESA, CNES
and Arianespace. Located in Evry near Paris, this Centre will provide
full support to the press under excellent conditions. Travel and
accommodation costs cannot, of course, be borne by the three
organisations.

A library of high-quality stock shots will be made available for
television use on Day-1 and on the day of the launch itself. However, no
other technical support can be provided. Therefore, TV networks wishing
to film, edit or transmit from Kourou should contact RFO, the local TV
station, for information on these facilities (Daniel Maldinez, RFO
Paris, tel. +33(0)1 55 22 73 69, fax +33(0)1 55 22 74 36).

- 2- Journalists intending to cover this event are asked to fill out
the attached form and fax it to ESA Public Relations
(+33(0)1.53.69.7690) as soon as possible. The deadline is 30
  September 1998.

ARIANE 5 is a programme of the European Space Agency ESA, which has
delegated prime contractor responsibility for development of this new
launcher to CNES.

Flight 503 is the final qualification flight, carried out under ESA
responsibility. The launcher used for this flight is the first unit of a
production batch ordered by Arianespace from European industry.

Launch operations at the ELA 3 Ariane launch complex at Europe's space
port, the Guiana Space Centre or CSG, will be conducted by Arianespace.

ARIANE 503 Press arrangements

For the Ariane 503 launch, two main press centres will be in
operation:

- The European Press Centre or CDPE is located in Evry near Paris
(CNES/Arianespace building), next to the visitors' reception lounge.

The centre will open five hours before the launch and provide
journalists with non-stop communication with the Press Centre in Kourou.
In particular, they will be able to follow all press conferences and
briefings given in Kourou live, using interactive videoconferencing.

Journalists will also have access to the VIP reception lounge and will
be provided with full facilities for interviews.

Radio and TV can apply to associate their live commentary with the
video-transmissions. Betacam copies of selected footage will be
available immediately after the event.

A team of speakers, made up of senior officials, technical managers and
representatives of firms working on the Ariane-5 programme, will take
questions from the press.

- The Jupiter Press Centre is located in the Jupiter building at the
Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana.

It will open in the morning on Day-2. A press conference and briefings
will be scheduled and announced as operations proceed.

ESA, CNES and Arianespace have arranged a complimentary "Press Liaison
Service" based in Paris (transferring to Kourou for the countdown
period) to help in making the following arrangements:

- air transport to Guiana (reservations, changes in date etc.), -
booking accommodations, - travel in Guiana (airport/hotels/Jupiter
press centre), and - car hire in Guiana.

There is of course no obligation to make use of these services and
journalists are welcome to make their own travel, accommodation and car
hire arrangements if they so wish.

The Press Liaison Service will be managed by the French firm SOCFI
(contact Mr. Philippe Fournier, tel. +33(0)1.44.88.2525 or fax
+33(0)1.40.26.0444).

- Other, local press centres will be open on the day of the launch
only, allowing the press to watch the launch video live and to follow
the post-launch press briefings by teleconference.

Local press centres are planned at: Toulouse, France	: CNES/CST
	Darmstadt, Germany	: ESA/ESOC Noordwijk, Netherlands	: ESA/ESTEC
	Frascati, Italy	: ESA/ESRIN Washington D.C.	: ESA/CNES/Arianespace
Tokyo	: Arianespace Singapore	: Arianespace

If you intend to cover the launch, either in Kourou or from one of the
other official press centres, you must complete the attached form and
return it to us.
