part deux:

The problem with deploying during an emergency is that you don't have a lot
of time to fool around teaching anybody even the fundemantals
of a different operating system.

And Mapping programs, as simple as Oziexplorer or as complex as Arcview are
also needed at the command and control point.

And we would not have the time or the ability to wait for operators with a
linux skillset. I want to be able to take a very fast typist,
put he/she in front of the machine , and pass traffic like crazy. This would
still satisfy the rule of having the station under your control but without
necessarily you at the keyboard.

I have deployed more than a few times as a ground search and rescue search
manager (search master) and having a system that most
people can use and do basic trouble shooting on is one less thing to worry
about , instead concentrating on the task at hand. This is also
why, while the pactor people do annoy me, that I also appreciate WINLINK and
the ability to send and recieve emails while miles away
from a landline or internet connection.

Having linux as an operating system is a risk I'm not prepared to take, at
least at this time, when lives may depend on our mapping
and comms programs. we have redundancy in computers in our Command post, as
well as other gear, so that if we do have a windows
"blue screen of death" there is back-up.

And a windows software "look alike" is not a solution either, when the #$%^
is hitting the fan.

I'm sure that Linux is a fine operating system, with many adherents
worldwide. ...... BUT....... to me it's not ready for prime time.
If Linux is so wonderful, how come it is not in more widespread use....
there must be something limiting it's use, besides Bill Gates I
mean .........

I see MT63 and the other comparable modes as being perfect for handling
health and welfare, and logistics traffic in an emergency.
The large volume of traffic would lend itself to these modes.... it would be
nice to send Word documents as a file rather than cut and paste
text.... any ideas?
