Hi Tony, Bob and all,
The Great Depression was worldwide, Australia and America weren't the
only countries where the government put people to work, Germany was
another notable example. Yes there was hardship, suffering and death but
no scandal, hard times call for harsh measures if one or a nation is to
survive. Those were different times and different people with different
hearts and minds, "better" people with a spirit of cooperation and
togetherness pretty much absent today. Don't hope against all hope, hard
times will come again so prepare yourselves in heart and mind to be like
them pulling together to survive.
As for hopping trains, the railroad "bulls" really didn't look the other
way, some did while other sadistic SOBs took advantage of the 'boes
robbing, beating and throwing them from the trains. There is an excellent
movie about that starring Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine and of course
the name escapes my head like a seive. Of course I remember the song by
Roger Miller, King of the Road. Hooping trains or riding thumb in hard
times you find what you need any way you can and you're not above
stealing chickens either, careful of that shotgun now.
It must be too early in the morning, you're supposed to be HOPPING trains
HOPING to find a job HOOPING barrels.
