Well Tony I think we will be reasonably well off for electricity, especially
if we stop exporting coal. Solar thermal I think is the best bet.
There is an operational solar thermal station in Spain, two under
construction in the US and an experimental installation at Liddel Power
Station in the Hunter valley. They are all base load stations.
Re vegitables, the Transition Town movement advocates market garden farms
adjacent to towns and supplying shoppers at regular markets.
There is already an increasing use of this now.
I noticed in Hornsby, our local major shopping area already has on Saturday a
flock of vegetable and craft stands. Also stands selling other foods, cheese
etc.
I would expect the backyard vegi garden may make up comeback as well.
My son is a keen tomatoe grower, mush to my surprise.
Re transport; I could visulise towns and cities being organised in a star
shape with commuter rail along and around the city, like the Moscow
underground. Market gardens between the arms of the stars and trolley busses
to the railway stations.
Variations on that of course but Sydney west of Parramatta is already like
the star shape.
