Not true of the one for the Honda VFR, that is apart from one single regular
failure - that of the battery charge rectifier/ regulator. Honda had lots of
grief in the early days of the engines design and poor reliabilty. They solved
it by a redesign which produced an almost bullet proof engine, which proved to
be extremely long lived and reliable.

The problem with the R/R was a lack of adequate cooling, it being mounted
close to the heat from both exhaust and engine, plus being enclosed by the
fairing. To add to the problems it even lacked any metal mass in which to
dispose of its heat. So owners habitually carried with them a spare R/R. These
units rectify the 3phase output of the alternator, then the regulator section
simply shorts the DC ouput to hold the voltage down to that required for the
system - in the process generating lots of surplus heat.

After checking its running temperature and often seeing 80 deg C, I decided
that the high operating temperature was cerainly the cause of its regular
demise. I added a nice big finned heatsink and ducted some cool air down to
where it is mounted - pulling it down to below 50 deg C. That seems to have
kept it happy so far.
