Once when I was in the army and home on leave (my home was in Kalamunda, a
small hilltop town on top of the Darling Range, elevation 1000 feet). I
had to get back to Midland Junction to meet my lift back to camp 65 miles
away so I got a taxi. Petrol was rationed and scarce.
We started off down the long hill, and he told me he saved a lot of fuel
going from Kalamunda to Midland because he turned off the engine, put the
car in neutral and he could cover over half the 12 miles to Midland
without using any fuel. I believed he could do that when we took the bend
at the bottom of the hill at something over 70 mph. When I opened my eyes
we were indeed over halfway to Midland.This driver was all confidences on
the way down. He told me he had just got out of gaol. He didn't say what
for and I was too busy hanging on to ask.
