I have been tested for the past four years since I turned 85. No big deal
except for one examiner whom I have had twice. I have had three different
examiners. Two gave me a clean sheet and in one case passed with no
comment and one small comment from the other (He got it wrong anyway -
said I did not check to the right entering a roundabout. He had it wrong,
I did and there was not a vehicle in sight! I am not stoopid! Next time I
twist my head to the right to make sure he sees I am checking!).

There was this one woman. Told me I cancelled my indicators too soon. I
told her I didn't cancel them at all - the car did as soon as I turned the
wheel. "Oh. she said,"That's a matter of adjustment". Rubbish if course,
but I didn't argue. Before the driving test we have a medical assessment
from the doctor who can say whether you are suffering from dementia or are
physically incapable of driving safely or have poor eyesight. A driver
like Warren's example "blind as a bat" would never get past the medical,
neither would one with a serious heart problem.

In some parts a murmur is growing as to why one of the safest age brackets
(ask your insurance company - I have had a 60% no claim bonus for 50
years) is tested purely because of age. One state is considering dropping
this requirement of a driving test and my state says it is watching this
to see what happens. As far as insurance is concerned my grand children
pay some hundreds of dollars more for car insurance than I do. WhY? You
can answer that one easily enough. They have the most accidents, we are
safer drivers.

Mag wheels. On sale everywhere here Warren and they are not plated steel.
Yes they are expensive. My grandson paid some thousands of dollars for a
set of mags and tyres to match. I had some that were actually plastic but
one by one they flew off into the bush when I was travelling. I didn't
miss them. Cheap amd nasty.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.

Mag wheels? I haven't seen them since the motorheads of the 60s and 70s
grew up, take a closer look. Dollars to donuts they're fancy chrome
plated steel, real aluminium-magnesium alloy rims were VERY expensive
even at yesterday's prices.

The insurance industry has always placed the under 25 drivers in the high
risk category for obvious reasons and set premiums accordingly. There has
never been question let alone dispute until more or less recently when
the eye was cast on the old and cranky. Here the "Grey Panthers" charged
anyone with a proposal flailing their canes and throwing walkers so no
legislation ever got past proposal. Cowering in fear they gave up leaving
the geezers to sip their Geritol in peace. Some go senile but we all get
stubborn I suppose, frankly I wouldn't mind being retested if I still
drove, a rolling hazzard I don't want to be. My late uncle is a prime
example, blind as a bat he still drove sometimes with ME as his co-pilot,
scared the crap out of me every time.
