Yes, it was what are called fifth wheel in some places.
To me a caravan is up to about 20 feet and towed behind a car, 4WD etc.
A campervan is a Toyota High Ace conversion or similar van.
A Motor Home is a a Toyota 20 seater bus conversion or a specially made large
vehicle or on a light truck chassis.
People travelling around Australia long term, and it takes a long while, are
known as Grey Nomads. Never heard the term Grey Gypsies before Bob used it.
Gypsies have a bad aura here as they have been coming from Eastern Europe and
putting scanners on automatic teller machines and ripping off oldies by "fixing"
their roofs etc.

The big disadvantage of the mobile home idea is whenever you want to go down to
the shops, or make a local trip you have to disconnect, pack everything away
and then do the reverse when you come back.
With a caravan you just get into the car and go.
Thats is why the bigger ones tow cars.
It would consume a lot more fuel to tow a car.

Fuel cost is not a big factor because most only move from one location to the
next after a stay of a week or two.

Here most leave Sydney/Melbourne in April or May and head North to Queensland
then across to the Northern Territory and then down through the centre to
Sth Australia and then back east. Others go down the west coast from Darwin and
down the WA coast to Perth and Albany and then back accross the Nullabor
to Adelaide and Sydney or melbourne.

About 12,000 miles I think. They mostly take about a year to do it and are in
the North during the "dry" and winter and in the South during the Summer.

One Swiss amateur came to Sydney on his honeymoon and they intended to do the
long trip around and told an amateur on two metres what they were planning
to do in two weeks. She invited them for lunch and a relevation on distances
involved. They ultimately did a shortened trip in two months in their campervan.

Well thats all folks;
