Hi Warren.
First, thank you for explaining what SATs are. Just to make things
confusing, we also have them for younger children to find out what
subjects are best for them ti study.

The 'A' Levels still exist, 'A' stands for 'Advanced' BTW. Most kids now
take GCSEs, the exams to show what they have learnt up to age 16, then, if
they are good enough, they go to a 'Sixth Form College' where they take
the 'A' levels. The results at 'A' level determine which university will
accept them. It is not just a question of Oxbridge v The Rest, there are
various grades of university (unofficially I think) e.g. Edinburgh is much
sought after as is Manchester with it's history of good medical degrees
and radio Astronomy, as in the radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, the one
which could track Sputnik 1. Others such as Lancster, often referred to as
a 'Redbrick' though it is made of concrete, are among the also rans.

I believe that the US has somethibg similar. I have heard of the 'Ivy
League' colleges, though I am not sure what they are. I know that Harvard
is associated with Oxbridge and that MIT is supposed to be pretty good
technically so I expect the system is the same, especially as it now costs
a great deal of money to go to the British Universities and the fees have
just doubled for many, hence the student riots in London over the winter.

No. Don't worry. You won't get me into maths :-)
