Hi Barry and all,
You bring up a good point, yeah, what about the fuel cells? That's the
weakest link in the chain and they've been around a lot longer than
busses fitted with them. I'm sure there is plenty of data to be had but
where are they hiding it? These things don't come cheap so like battery
powered cars I start to wonder about operating costs over the lifetime of
the bus.
Now we come to the lifetime of the bus, I've seen them around for 20
years or so, just over the life of the average car. NOW consider the
mileage over those years and there is NO comparison.
"It might well be that busses could stand a shorter lifetime than cars."
Any way you slice it Barry that statement is ludicrous. When you get down
to brass tacks one goes through several cars while a bus will last a
lifetime... and then some.
Of course there is more than "probably" when it comes to reconditioning
fuel cells, it's a dead certainty. Just about every other part of any
vehicle can be and is reconditioned and if you keep one around long
enough you'll end up reconditioning more than half of it. When was the
last time you bough a new car part? In most cases you take the old one to
the store for a discount on somebody else's old part and somebody else
ends up with yours.
