There was some discussion some time ago about the trial of hydrogen fuel
cell buses in Perth West Oz, and the claims by some packeteers that the
system has no future.
The trials have been going for quite some time now amd it is interesting
to see some results being promulgated.

Here is part of a report from the UK;

>We took part in a really successful trial called CUTE (Clean Urban >Transport
for Europe), which
tested the first generation of zero-emission >fuel cell buses.

>The trial was the largest of its type anywhere in the world. It was really
>important because local
air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and >inner-city noise are major
causes for concern.>The project delivered >outstanding results on
reliability, with the buses >being operationally >available 90 per cent of
the time over the three >years.
>We want to introduce ten hydrogen buses by 2010
>We were so pleased by the trial that we now want to introduce ten hydrogen
buses by 2010.

Even allowing for the enthusiasm of the group supportingthe trials, the
report does not sound like failure to me.

Results from Perth? The trial has not concluded but the preliminary
reports show a great deal of promise. Here is a comment from the official
website:

>The three EcoBuses performed beyond expectations and at the conclusion of >the
trial had travelled
approximately 258,000km, consumed over 46 tonnes >of hydrogen and carried
over 320,000 passengers. 300 tonnes of tailpipe >carbon emissions were
avoided by not operating conventional diesel buses.

>The EcoBus trial received a number of awards including the 2005 Banksia >Award
for Government Leading
by Example, the 2004 Chartered Institute of >Logistics and Transport
Outstanding Achievement Award and the 2004 >Sustainable Transport
Coalition Government Innovation Award.

As I commentd some time ago, there is no fiality to the quessiton till the
trials are over but the present indications are that those conducting the
trials are pleased with the results so far, and there is every indication
that the use of ecobuses is to be extended. So far - promising results
here and in the UK.
Cheers,
