Who tears down an engine and replaces rings and valve guides these days?
At current labour costs it is not worthwhile unless you do it yourself.
Unless we can afford a new car every five years or maybe less, we run them
to 200 000 km or so and then turn them in. They usually finish up in a
junk yard sold off for parts. My car has done 160 000 km, no smoke, no
problems and so I will keep it for another year or so. Me? I usually buy a
used car with about 30 000 km on the clock rather than one completely new,
but then I am retired and cannot afford to buy a new car every few years.
In any case car engines these days are virtually indestructible. I rarely
see a car leaving a plume of smoke..Improved lubrication and improved
fuels tell the story. Of course my using LPG helps too as there is no
crankcase dilution and engine wear is much less.
When I was young I did all my own repairs, and I serviced Vanguards for a
friend of mine who had the local agency. I coud not afford to pay a
workshop to do this work at that time.

time to tear down an engine replacing piston rings and valve guides.
