Hi Bill. Well I passed my vehicle licence for Army trucks in 1942 and my
civilian licence for car in 1944, motor cycle a few months later. There
were plenty of diesel powered vehicles around then. I never saw one in the
Army but some of the bus services in the city of Perth used them. The 5
cyl Perkins diesel was used in some of the buses. Plenty of black smoke
issuing from the exhausts and coating the roads with an oil film which
became slippery after rain.
My earliest recollection of petrol prices here was in the 1930s when it
was 1/6d a gallon (15c), later rising to 2/6. Even in the 1970s when I
came to this place it was (from memory) about 40c. Then PM Frazer decided
there was an oil crisis looming and that the price of petrol must rise and
he put a high tax on it of about 50% (again from memory) to be adjusted
with the C.P.I. so that the price went up with the cost of living. The
present tax is about 50cpl fixed at that by the Howard Government
comparatively recently. However our State Government also put its own tax
on fuel. Not sure now what it is but I think it is around 6cpl, maybe
more. These taxes were supposed to fix the roads, but (you guessed it) not
much fixing of the roads occurs in this state.
Current price of petrol? IN my part of the state it is $1.66 per litre
with diesel considerably higher - about $1.90. LPG is 83.9cpl though one
firm which controls most of the supplies (Kleenheat) discounts to about 79
cpl if you apply for their card.
The exchange rate of dollar for pound last time I saw it was roughly 47p
to the dollar, with the Aus. dollar close to parity with the USD at about
96c US to the dollar AUS.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
