I can't answer that except to say that I believe it is correct that race
cars use ethanol but I would think that it would be in a mixture not
straight..
In 1946 when we got only 4 gallons of petrol a month. I was teaching on
one of the group settlements on the south coast of WA. The fuel allowance
did not last me long with the nearest town of any size 45 miles away so I
broke it down with power kerosene on which the car ran quite well. The
power kerosene was easy to get as I boarded on a dairy farm and power
kerosene was the fuel used in the tractor. They bought it by the 44 gallon
drum.
I ran out of fuel one day 7 miles from home; all I had was a bottle of
methylated spirit which I poured into the tank. The car was an A model
Ford, and I found that the engine would run OK as long as I used half
choke. I got home on it but in those days meths would have been a very
expensive fuel for a motor vehicle. The smell from the exhaust would have
raised the suspicion of any policeman who happened to get a sniff. To use
fuel other than petrol was fobidden, but many of us used kerosene.
Lighting kero in this car went quite well also as long as you went easy
on the accelerator. To push too hard made the engine pink quite seriously.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.

60% of the energy density of petrol.

petrol ?
