Water injection is a tried and tested system for petrol engines. SAAB APC
was one such commercial system. With water injection (sometimes water and
alcohol) the incoming water cools the air and increases the density of the
air and so allows more fuel in. This allows a higher compression ratio with
lower octane fuel. Normally you get predetonation but this system supressed
that. On the SAAB a tank held the water and should you run out of water,
the ignition control system retarded the timing to stop the engine pinking
itself to death.
This was designed in from the start on the SAAB and not some snake-oil
gimmick sold in the after market.
