Well my memory suggests that the tests here found that it was of little or
no advantage to use these gadgets. Improvement in performance or fuel
consumption were insignificant, if indeed there was any advantage at all.

I think the final word on this can be that if these gadgets did produce a
significant  saving in fuel consumption and/or engine performance we would
be all using them. We are not! End of story I believe.

The tests here were done by the engineers in the Royal Autombile Club, and
I believe they would know what they were doing.These tests were long after
the advent of the Spitfire.If the water boiled and generated steam it
could be that the passage of the normal fuel could be blocked, but the
Spitfire is history anyway. Who knows whether the story was true?
