Hi All,
There were quite a few cars of that era that had a vacuum operated fuel
pump.  I am not sure of the exact details but in general there was a
connection from the engine manifold to a container usually located on the
firewall near the engine. 

When the engine was running the fuel was sucked up into a chamber with a
float. When the fuel level reached the predetermined point the float
triggered an over center valve which shut off the vacuum from the manifold
and let the fuel run into a lower chamber from where it supplied the
carburetor under gravity feed.

When the float settled with the transfer of fuel into a lower chamber the
over center valve reset and the vacuum started drawing more fuel into the
upper cylinder..

I can remember my father getting out and giving the "pump" a couple of
raps on the side (I nearly said taps on the side but thought that might be
confusing) to free the float and valve assembly which apparently got
stuck.

An interesting way of pumping the fuel.
