Hi Bob and all,
Actually car but mostly radio. (;->) Victor Corporation had a popular
phonograph theycalled the Victrola and another company put one in a car
and blatently ripped off the name, Motorola. Primitive and way before
it's time it quickly became the Motorola car radio and where is that
pesky antenna? In the running board of course, if it had a whip it was a
cop car with the Motorola tuned between 1600 and 1800KHz. That's why in
the movies you'd see the cops sitting there listening to "Calling all
cars, calling all cars, be on the lookout for..." and nobody picked up a
microphone. The last to leave the airwaves was the New Hampshire State
Police 1710 sometime in the early '70s, I managed to tweak the LO of one
of my radios so I could listen to them and 160M hams. Now the AM
broadcast band extends to 1700 and from there to 1800 is the Japanese
beacon band, never heard anything else.
I remember the command sets, the ARC-5 was very popular for tapping the
455KHz IF of another set and dropping it to I think 50KHz for dual
conversion selectivity and image rejection. In the lower west side of
Manhattan NY is the financial district once dominated by the Mercantile
Building and what we called Radio Row where the big boys of Amateur Radio
and dozens of surplus shops could be found. You could barely walk down
the street without tripping over command sets all over the sidewalks and
a visit to Harvey Radio would have you drooling all over the long row of
Collins gear. Ah, to be a monied ham with a complete S Line station!
Along came the 1960s and the World Trade Center, they should have left
the neighborhood alone and saved us all the trouble of going downtown to
that high priced baron Barry and his Motorola.
Before I confuse everybody he specializes in Motorola 2-Way FM and
digital radio systems and charges way too much for them.
Heh, I see you found out one of the reasons why Teac never was a popular
stereo hi-fi make. In situations like that you can take it back to the
dealer and tell him to blow it out his Bozak. (That should bring a few
smiles from American audiophiles and that was a rhyme out of parsley sage
rosemary and thyme.) Well at least you can't blame it on Ray, must have
been somebody else's Tank. (;->) So why didn't you get a Grundig???
