Well Ron.. I wondered the same question.. Why not just shoot it off into
space.. Perhaps there is some policy or ruling about this.. Maybee they
didnt want to become unpopular and been seen as ungreen poluting space..
After all in reality they spent alot of money making absolutely sure that it
landed in a good spot instead of doing a skylab and landing on people.. The
thing skylab is remembered for is just that..

They wanted to save face to a degree I suspect, not wanting MIR to be
remembered for the wrong things.. Suggesting that the Russian space
programme has a reputation to maintain (and it does) ..
The potential damage to the programme that could be done if a slurr was put
on it is easy to see.. This damage could come from either littering space
irresponsibly (as some would see it) or landing MIR in a inappropriate
place.. So in reflection if this was indeed the thinking behind it all then
what they achieved was a sucsess.
Of course for the purists they ended up littering the Pacific floor. But we
are all greatful they made that happen insead of our own backyard. The
chances of recovery are greater than that of outerspace also. But in reality
its not easy.

There are some thoughts and theories.. Maybee there are some answers.. They
are all my own thoughts and I am no authority on the subject. I am just a
facinated observer.
There was and maybee still is an interesting web page on the subject of mir
reentry at www.mirreentry.com .. Perhaps there is an answer to be found
there.. I feel sure this is a question many have pondered..

} I have to ask this.....it may have been asked before, but why did the MIR
} structure have to be sent DOWN into the Earth's atmosphere.
} They had to fire rockets to send it down, so why didn't they use the same
} rockets (or a bit bigger ones) to send it out into space?
} All it is doing now is adding to the atmospheric pollution.
} Cheers.....Ron.
