Hi All,
I have just heard on the news that the Mir space station is being
abandoned after 13 years in orbit. The achievements of the station cannot
be too strongly emphisised, lasting nearly three times it's designed life
span and providing some excellent opportunities for amateur radio
activity.
There has been no more exciting contact for me than hearing my name and
call sign from a voice in space and I am sure that many people will feel
the same.
There is talk that the station may be reactivated next year but I fear
that the financial restrictions in Russia and the suspect condition of the
space station without a crew on board may make this wishful thinking (I
truly hope I am wrong).
As I type this the live pictures are showing the final separation of the
soyuz from Mir.
Good luck to this grand old lady of space whose name means PEACE.
Sadly Missed.
