Mir Amateur Radio Status: April 26, 1999

By Miles Mann WF1F,
MAREX-NA (Manned Amateur Radio Experiment, North American Division)

SSTV Update from Mir crew:
Over the weekend MAREX-NA engineer Farrell Winder was able to have a s=
hort
conversation
with French Cosmonaut Jean-Pierre Heignere on board the Russian S=
pace
station Mir (April 25, 19:11 UTC). During the conversation, Farrell a=
sked
Jean-Pierre about the Mir crews work-load and about the status of the =
SSTV
system. Jean-Pierres response was that the Mir crew was very busy =
with
their normal experiments and that they would try to connect the SSTV sy=
stem
when they have some free time. The Mir crew has been making random v=
oice
contacts around the world, and many of the ground stations have been as=
king
Jean-Pierre the same question [when will you be able to see some more =
SSTV
images]. Jean-Pierre asked Farrell, what pictures would be the b=
est,
Inside or Outside pictures from Mir. Farrell requested some new shot=
s of
the Mir crew and some interior shots of Mir and some outside shots =
too.
Jean-Pierre commented that at the present time they were over a very cl=
oudy
section of the USA. A few seconds later, Mir passed below the horizon=
 and
contact was ended.

I would like to ask everyone to please be patient regarding Amateur R=
adio
operations on Mir. The Amateur Radio portion of the Mir experiments=
 are
primarily OFF-Hours experiments. The Mir crews do have a very =
busy
schedule and only have a very limited amount of FREE-Time to use=
 the
educational Amateur Radio experiments.

MAREX-NA ISS projects:
The MAREX-NA team has built and delivered three projects to the Rus=
sian
Space Station Mir. (TNC Modem upgrade, RF DCI filer project and the =
SSTV
Project). Because of the success of the three projects we have been a=
sked
by Energia to submit a proposal for additional projects for =
 the
International Space Station (Alpha). It was a great honor to be aske=
d by
Energia to submit a project proposal. The MAREX-NA team has submitted=
 one
draft proposal to build a SSTV project similar to the successful =
SSTV
project currently on the Russian Space Station Mir. The ISS SSTV ver=
sion
will be very similar to the Mir version with a few additional features:=

Tentative planed features:

Repeater Mode:
Allows ground stations to Relay their SSTV images, similar to a v=
oice
repeater.

Remote Control camera:
Ground Stations will be able to remotely steer the camera from Earth.

At the present time the MAREX-NA SSTV International Space Station pro=
ject
is in the proposal / consideration stage. If the project is selected=
, we
hope to deliver the final systems by the end of the year. The project =
will
be a joint project involving several satellite clubs. Each club wil=
l be
responsible for a different part of the project (antennas, power suppl=
ies,
etc.).

Last year MAREX-NA delivered three Kenwood/Tasco SSTV systems to Energi=
a in
Russia. One of the systems is currently on the Russian Space Station =
Mir.
The other two SSTV systems are in Energia Russia and are being used=
 for
Demonstrations and testing system. A demonstration of the MAREX-NA =
SSTV
system was given to the First cosmonaut ISS crew. The comments from=
 the
cosmonaut ISS crew were (I want this on my mission).

Current Mir Crew Members:
SOYUZ TM-29 arrived at Mir on February 20, 1999. Mir Soyuz TM-29 =
crew
consisted of French cosmonaut Jean-Pierre Heignere, Viktor Afanasyev=
 and
Slovakian Cosmonaut Ivan Bella
On February 28, some of the crew returned to earth, they were:
Slovak Ivan Bella and Gennadiy Paldalko.
Gennadiys mission lasted approximately 6 months (August 16 1998 =96 Fe=
bruary
28 1999)

The remaining crew consists of:

The French cosmonaut Jean-Pierre Heignere
Cosmonaut Viktor Afanasyev
Cosmonaut Sergei Avdeyev. Sergei mission began August 16, and is expe=
cted
to last a total of 9-11 months.

PMS Status (Personal Message System):
