Hi !
I've been using the MFJ-1278 for a number of years now and altough
it works great for 2 meters it's on shortwave i want to use it.
I have, however, a number of questions regarding this machinery:
- My mailbox sends/receives only 7-bit Ascii (not 8-bit) and the
values of Awlen/8bitconv don't seem to matter. Is there a way
to fix this ?
- The modem tone pairs are a bit "peculiar" with only 1000/850 and
200 Hz shifts available. The "peculiar" bit about them are the tones
they use: 2975/2125, 2310/2110 and a bit better 2200/1200.
My objection to this is the fact that my rig, a Kenwood TS-140S,
cuts/lowers frequencys close to 2500/3000 Hz and i would like to
have the tone pairs in the middle of the audio spectrum. Is it
possible to readjust ?
- When using the TNC for 2 meters i have to disconnect the shortwave
because it causes a whole bunch of retries on weak signals.
I use port 2 for 2 meters and port 1 for shortwave. Can i in any
way fix this ?
- The tnc is a huge transmitter of RFI and i use shielded cables and
good earthings to keep it down but i'm not really satisfied with it.
Should i put the tnc in a copper-box or is there some kind of cure ?
- My impression of using it for listening to RTTY stations when compared
to Hamcomm 3.0 is not very nice for MFJ. Hamcomm needs pretty strong
transmissions (when compared to a Harris RF-5710 modem) but that's
nothing in comparison with the MFJ. Could my 1278 be in need of some
realignment/repair or what's going on here ?
