Hello All Sailors ... That covers everyone of us, from
"Sinkpoters" to "Ragbaggers"...
At the start of September, we got an excited foreign
voice on our answering machine, which I intercepted
rightaway.
Problem: Oil light had come on and they thought they
------ might loose the engine, of their super fast
fishing boat.
First Question: Where are you?
Answer: Let you speak to "............" ..ok
Hello Peter, I was at the top of Georgina Island
and was heading home when the light came on...
I think I am near a beach with lots of people and
will try to swim in ... What? No stay with the
boat .... sorry swimmers already gone to shore.
Are you close to shore? Yes..OK.
Where is the Marine Radio < VHF> call me on Ch 9
as I have dispatched "Audrey 2" to your location
with the Sympetic oil for the boat.
NO radio....AAA batterys died too quickly.
In the end, we did find the boat close to shore.
"Audrey2" was not sent out, as we thought they were
very close to land, by the travel line and time.
What always gets me is this dependence on Cellphone
when with numerous boats that day, anyone of them
could have rendered help via a call on Ch 16.
All ends well .....except some don't.
Lesson learned...Boat will be fully checked before use
and the Marine radio will be onboard.
Just as this went to be placed on packet .... a missing
parachute-type plane. It looks like a seat with a big
propeller on the back pushing it forward, and the chute
gives'em lift.
Why this man went up at sunset is beyond me...but he is
now dead...the aircraft discovered just off shore to
and in sight of the harbour here ...I wonder why
no one saw the craft, or heard the engine quit
and or see or hear the craft hitting the water?
Happy Safe Sailing for what we have of the marine season.
