Here in the UK as well as world wide, we have been deluged with warnings
of the dangers of gping out uncovered in the sun.

Suddenly. The great men of science have realised that people are getting
ill for the reasons I learned at school, many years ago.
The reason white, northern Europeans evolved white skins was so that they
could absorb more UV light in these northern latitudes. We never had
problems with that, though, in my area, being sunny, like most natives of
such areas, we didn't bother taking clothes off, just rolling sleeves up
to work. I only ever met one young lad, who did try to get a quick tan
and, only lasted 3 weeks after dignosis of melanoma.

For many years now, probably because of the cosmetics industry, English
people, even small children, are plastered with SPF 99 or whatever, even
in this damp climate. Couple that with the habit of getting sprayed with
fake
tan, very popular in London, and you get too much UV blocking.

Therefore, it has come to light, that people are suffering vitamin
deficiency diseases, especially E and are becoming ill.

We have all heard and seen on TV how the people 'down under' walk around
in wide hats with green noses to keep out the sun, but being beneath the
Antarctic ozone layer, that is probably a wise thing to do.

I suppose it's just a matter of being sensible, what is necessary in Oz
isn'tnecessary in Europe. Reasonable precautions are probably needed
especially at the seaside in summer (Hah!) but defining 'reasonable' has
always been difficult for most people.

Personally, if I go to a hot place, I have two tricks, learnt from a
Cornishman and a Spaniard. They work well and are cheap and I am not going
to say what they are or they won't be cheap any more.

For everyday walking around, I just enjoy the sun when we get it. Brittain
hasn't changed since the Roman writer Tacitus described it as a 'land of
permanent cloud and rain, the armpit of the Empire (anus Imperii)' As for
fake tans, I am a bit long in the toth now but I certainly wouldn't want
to spray myself with something which costs a lot and turns me the colour
which Asians and Africans get for free.

Back to the point. Is there any evidence of deficiency diseases in OC? or
is all the concentration on avoiding melanoma?

All the best from - Ian, G0TEZ @ GB7FCR
