In Australia we are recommended to have a prostate test using a blood test
for PSA (prostate specific antigens). There should be a low count - mine
is satisfactry at 2.5. If the count rises to a much higher figure it shows
that the body is fighting cancer cells in the prostate and further tests
are carried out. The death rate here is far from 100%, the figure Ian
gives for the UK. As long as there is early detection the cancer can be
treated and most cases put into remission. I am no doctor but I believe it
is hormone treatment that is used. I could be corrected on that.
Two Australian scientists have discovered a treatment for cervical cancer
according to news reports here. I don't think there would be much doubt
about its efficacy, our local scientific men are not noted for making
statements which are over confident, the reverse in fact, and we did not
hear of it from Richard and Judy.

(pron:cerviacal) cancer. Much rejoicing. It was just the same about two
years ago when a new drug was discoverd for breast cancer.
Three years ago, on a popular daytime programme, hosted by a couple
called
Richard an Judy, man and wife. There was a demonstration of a new device
by it's inventor, an Italian surgeon. It was a cheap, simple device which
could be used by a nurse. The patient didn't even have to get undressed.
I have never seen it since because it was designed to detect prostate
cancer with 90% success. If cancer was indicated then the doctor could get
out his rubber glove and book the man in at a hospital for a specialist
oncologist check.
I only saw it one, no rejoicing, it is not in use in the UK. The comment
made after the demonstration was by Judy, she said "I wonder if it could
be modified to detect breast cancer?"
The inventor said that it would also detect testicular cancer.
