If I judge the present sentiment in this country correctly it will be some
considerable time before the issue of a republic rises again here. The
most likely trigger would be the death of the present Queen. While she is
alive the people have made it quite clear they are not in favour of OZ
becoming a republic, and it is equally plain that they do NOT wish to
change the flag.

The second question would be one of the flag. A new flag?? Maybe, but most
likely not. Over the past four or five years there have been a remarkable
surge of support for the present flag in Australia. On Australia Day you
see the Australian flag everywhere. This last weekend I have seen more
Australian flags waving from various vantage points than I ever have
previously. They are on flagpoles outside private houses, people were
carrying them, they were mounted on cars, even the youth, usually so blase
about such things, were carrying and waving them. This has not happened
previously to the extent that it has this last two or three years, and
particularly this year.

Now maybe the above only applies to this state, but I don't think so. We
see much the same thing all over the country - a blaze of patriotic
fervour and the flag at the centre of it, and I have not seen this
previously to this extent.

As for a "kafuffle". If the people don't want it., and that is the present
indication, and it is forced on them, yes, there would be a "kafuffle",
and rightly so. At present the republicans have no hope of changing
anything, never mind the flag. Any change can only come after a referendum
returning a majority overall and all states in agreement. Pretty difficult
to accomplish, and note, please, at elections we get a 96% turnout of
voters.

I have told this how it seems to me, and I have not indicated in any way
my own attitude. I say that to avoid having Warren tell me I am confused,
as he is fond of doing!!! There is nothing so confusing as an American
election as witness the present circus over there!!
