I remember from using Mandrake that the symlinks get set at boot time.
After you have booted your new kernel, are the symlinks still OK??
If not, I suggest you have a look at 'make install'.

I take it /lib/modules/kernelversion-extraversion *does* exist??

My point is: get the kernel compiled and installed properly first,
before attacking PCMCIA. Make sure the the symbolic links in /boot are
pointing at the correct targets *after* a system restart. Make sure
the new kernel is actually being used: check with
 'uname -a'
that the extraversion and compile time are OK.

If all this is OK, then it is a safe bet the build or install of your
PCMCIA drivers has failed, if you can't see the directory
/lib/modules/<kernelversion-extraversion>/pcmcia

My guess here is, that you haven't told the PCMCIA configure script
the correct location of your new kernel sources. Maybe you have told
it /usr/src/linux, which is a broken symlink.

As an aside: chances are your PCMCIA network card driver is actually
built as part of the kernel modules (if you have ticked the
appropriate box during kernel menuconfig).

If this is the case, then the PCMCIA 'make config' will tell you that
it won't build the driver...only the card services utilities. The
driver will reside in:

/lib/modules/<kernelversion>/kernel/drivers/net/pcmcia/
