2009 NS Ladder Competition
(aka Spring/Summer Madness)
NCCC announces the Sixth NS Ladder Competition, the contest series of Spring
and Summer fun.
Dates
* Friday morning UTC 3 April - 7 August (Thursday evening NA time)
* 0230-0300 UTC (Note: Because of short event, precise timing is essential!
Synchronize start to WWV.)
* No Ladder 15/22/29 May (regular NS instead), 26 June (regular NS instead)
or 3 July (no NS)
* Out of 14 NS ladder contests, your top 9 scores count toward awards
* For complete schedule, see Next NS
Rules
* Bands: 20, 40 and 80. No 160 meters. Spread out between 30-45 kHz up
from band edge.
* Exchange: serial #, name, state/province
* Dupes allowed after one intervening QSO on same band or back-to-back with
band change
* For complete rules, see Rules
Reporting
* Post to the 3830 reflector via the 3830 submittal web page for the NS
Ladder Competition.
* Submit by Sunday night following contest; deadline is one week.
Logs
* No week-to-week submission of logs required
* Logs must be made available at the request of the NS organizers
Awards
* Special prizes, probably CA wine, to the leaders in our four divisions.
Your 9 highest scores out of 14 total events count toward the award in all
except the Newcomers Division, which is restricted to those who have not
entered NS Ladder in the past three years. NS Ladder X prize to the first
station with 3000 or more points in a single half hour Ladder session
(courtesy, K6VVA). Divisions:
o East of the Mississippi River (Canada: East of Manitoba/Ontario
border)
o West of the Mississippi River (excluding people in the next
category)
o NCCC member
o Newcomers (different award requirements, tentatively highest 6
scores in last 10 weeks of NS Ladder)
Software Support
* See links to specific logging programs under Software in the navigation
menu on the left side of this, and all, web pages.
Questions? Contact NCCC NS Ladder Competition Director Bill, N6ZFO.
Dupes
N6ZFO analyzes the results of including, or not, the "legal dupe" rule where a
station can be worked again on the same band after at least one intervening
QSO. Here is his analysis of the two "no-dupe" test sessions in the middle of
the 2009 NS Ladder series.

NS Rules
Note
These are the "nominal" NS rules and may be modified on a weekly basis. Refer
to the Next NS web page for details on any modifications for a given week.
Time
* 0230-0300 UTC Fridays (Thursday evening NA time, DST ignored).
Note: NS begins at exactly 0230. A participant may not respond to a CQ
or it's equivalent more than 30.00 minutes later -- 0300. In other words, if
the soliciting station receives and sends the call sign of the responding
station before 30.00 minutes after the start, then the QSO can be completed and
counted. Otherwise, not.
Frequencies (kHz)
* 1810-1820 (when used in NS)
* 14030-14045 (avoid W1AW at 14047.5)
* 7030-7045 (avoid W1AW at 7047.5 and PSK at 7038)
* 3530-3545
Exchange
* Serial number
* Name
* QTH (US state, Canadian Province or DX country)
Rules
NCJ NA CW Sprint rules with the following modifications:
* Rules modified to NAQP rules:
o NAQP multipliers, i.e., KH6 is an additional multiplier
o Multipliers count once per band
o 100 watts or less power
o Scoring is total QSOs times sum of multipliers on each band
* 1kHz QSY rule for both calling and answering CQs
* The same station can be worked multiple times provided 1 contact
separates the contact in both logs on the same band. Back-to-back contacts on
different bands are OK.
* 30-minute contest period (see Time above)
* Use of Skimmer or Packet not permitted
Reporting
* Post to the 3830 reflector via the 3830 submittal web page for the NS
Ladder Competition within 48 hours after the NS. Direct posting to N6ZFO is
also acceptable.
Guidelines
* Reduce CW speed for slower stations
* When N6RO works N6ZFO, N6RO may have had the required intervening QSO but
not N6ZFO. N6ZFO could respond with "NIQ" (no intervening QSO), "LTR" (for
Later), "NO" or "AS".
Software
* Use either the NA CW Sprint or Internet Sprint module of your favorite
logging program, making sure it allows duplicates to be worked and logged, even
though they may not be included in the computed score.
* If your logging software cannot add band-multipliers and/or legal dupes
to the score computation, then some manual post-contest work will be necessary
to get the total score.
* N1MM Logger, TR-Log, Win-Test and WriteLog handle NS completely,
including proper score computation. Details are available on the NS Software
web page, along with specific information on other popular contest loggers. If
you can enhance this information, please contact W0YK.
