2009 Kids Roundup Rules
1. Object: For kids under the age of 18 at the start of the contest, in the
United States, Canada and other countries to make contact and exchange QSO
information with as many stations operated by kids as possible in as many
States, Provinces and DX countries as possible. Adults are encouraged to
participate and assist kids to get on the air and make contacts.
2. Date and Period of the contest:
2.1. Date: Saturday, 30 May and Sunday, 31 May 2009
2.2. Contest Period:
2.2.1. Start: 1400 UTC Saturday (30 May 2009)
2.2.2. End: 2200 UTC Sunday (31 May 2009)
3. Mode and Bands:
3.1. Phone only.
3.2. Frequency bands: 80M-70cm (No WARC bands)
4. Entry Categories:
4.1. There are six categories. Four of the categories (M, L, C, and U) are for
kids under the age of 18 at the start of the contest.
4.1.1. “Mö - Multiple persons (unlicensed or licensed) operating a single or
multiple transmitters. Unlicensed persons may only operate if there is a
Control Operator present and only within the limits of the Control Operator’s
license privileges. Persons with amateur radio licenses must operate within the
limits of their license privileges or within the privileges of a control
operator who is present and using the control operator’s call sign. All 3rd
Party rules apply.
Note: We recommend a group name (e.g., CARLY, Rose Family, Krazy Kids, The
Sopranos, The Wild Bunch, etc.) be used to identify a multiple entry as part of
your entry submission.
4.1.2. “Lö - Single operator (Licensed kid) operating within the limits of
his/her own call sign.
4.1.3. “Cö - Single operator (Licensed kid) operating with a control operator
within the limits of the control operator’s license and using the control
operator’s call sign. All 3rd Party rules apply.
4.1.4. “Uö - Single operator (Unlicensed kid) operating with a control operator
within the limits of the control operator’s license and using the control
operator’s call sign. All 3rd Party rules apply.
4.1.5. “Yö - Single operator. A licensed female adult operator 18 years old or
older at the start of the contest. Not eligible for awards/prizes but
encouraged to participate and help kids make contacts.
4.1.6. “Oö - Single operator. A licensed male adult operator 18 years old or
older at the start of the contest. Not eligible for awards/prizes but
encouraged to participate and help kids make contacts.
Note: “Yö and “Oö operators are encouraged to help participating kids make
contacts. Unfortunately we cannot accept log entries from “Yö and “Oö
operators. However, we do reserve the right to recognize those operators for
their participation as we feel is appropriate.
4.2. Only one category may be used during the contest.
Note: Unlicensed kids may participate in this contest only in accordance with
the rules of the governing body of their amateur radio service. All U.S.
participants must be aware of and follow the FCC rules regarding Third Party
Traffic.
5. Exchange: The required exchange consists of:
5.1. Call Sign
5.2. QTH - US State, Canadian Province or other DX Country
5.3. Category (M, L, C, U, Y or O)
5.4. First name
Example #1: WN4FUI would respond to KA2JUQ’s call by sending: “WN4FUI Virginia
L (or Lima) Bobö, which indicates that WN4FUI is operating in Virginia and that
Bob is a licensed kid using his own call sign.
Example #2: VE2JUQ would respond to AA3RR by sending: “VE2JUQ Quebec U (or
Uniform) Tammyö, which indicates that VE2JUQ is operating in Quebec by Tammy
who is an unlicensed kid operating with a control operator and using the
control operator’s call sign (VE2JUQ).
Example #3: AA3RR responds to KB3DVA by sending: “AA3RR Pennsylvania C (or
Charlie) Ryanö, which indicates that Ryan is a licensed kid but is operating as
AA3RR in Pennsylvania with a control operator and using the control operator’s
call sign (AA3RR).
Example #4: AG4RR responds to KB3ATI by sending: "AG4RR Kentucky M (or Mike)
Patty", which indicates that Patty is operating as AG4RR in Kentucky as part of
a group of kids. Patty may be licensed and is the control operator and using
her call sign, or is licensed but operating with a control operator or is
unlicensed and operating with a control operator and using the control
operator’s call sign (AG4RR).
6. Miscellaneous:
6.1. All participants must operate within the rules of their applicable
licensing authority.
6.2. Kids can work any station within the limits of their license or the
license of their control operator. U.S. participants must operate within
existing 3rd party agreements.
6.3. Adults (Y or O) may only work kids (M, L, C, and U).
6.4. Kids must be under 18 years old at the start of the contest period.
6.5. Kids may operate in any one but only one of the four categories for kids
(M, L, C, or U).
6.6. Phone only - No formal net contacts allowed.
6.7. Contacts via repeaters, Echolink and IRLP are allowed. Log contacts via
Echolink and IRLP as 70cm contacts regardless of band actually used.
6.8. Initiate contact by calling “CQ Kidsö or “CQ Roundupö.
6.9. Each contact with a category M, L, C, or U station counts 10 points; Each
contact with a “Yö station counts 2 points; and each contact with an “Oö
station counts 1 point.
6.10. One contact per station per band.
6.11. Each contact with KI3DS earns 25 points

8. Awards:
8.1. A certificate and plaque will be given to the highest scoring entry in
each category (M, L, C, U).
8.2. Certificates will be given to the highest score in each U.S. State,
Canadian Province, and DX country (Other than Canada).
8.3. Certificates will be given to all participants under the age of 18 who
submit a contest log.
9. Entry Submission:
9.1. All entries (sent by e-mail, postal services, UPS, FEDEX, etc.) must be
received not later than 29 June 2009. Entries received after 29 June 2009 may
not be included in the final tally, at the discretion of the AARC, Jr. Contest
Committee.
9.2. Entries may be submitted in hard copy but soft copy is preferred.
9.2.1. Soft copy entries must be in the Cabrillo format. Any electronic file
that is not submitted in the required format will not be eligible for
consideration and awards. A free logging program was developed for this contest
by Scott Davis (N3FJP) and is available at www.n3fjp.com
Note: Do not confuse the ARRL’s Kids Day software for the Kids Roundup
software
9.2.2. Hard copy entries - Participants who choose to submit hard copy entries
are encouraged to download the Kids Roundup Scoring Summary and Kids Roundup
Contest Log from the Kids Roundup web site: kidsroundup.w3vpr.org The use of a
reasonable facsimile of the contest log is permitted.
9.2.3. Send contest logs via e-mail to: kidsroundup@w3vpr.org
