Amateur Radio Stations to be set-up at 10 cities

Lucknow, Aug 18 National Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR) will set up HAM
Radio Stations at 10 cities all over the country.
Amateur radio is a community of people that use radio transmitters and
receivers to communicate with other Amateur radio operators. Amateur radio
operators are called HAM (Two-way wireless) Radio Operators or simply
'HAMs'.
NIAR has already received grant-in-aid from the Department of Information
Technology, Govt of India, for the purpose.
NIAR conducted awareness programmes at the Relief Commissioner's office and
Awaas Bandhu(Uttar Pradesh Housing and Urban Planning Department) here
yesterday about the potential of HAM radio and its specific use in
emergencies and disaster management. It will set up a HAM radio station here
soon.
NIAR is established with financial support from the central government and
is now conducting programmes to promote Amateur Radio as part of social
cause and disaster mitigation in and around Bhuj, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar,
Puri, Uttarkashi, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Guwahati.
People from all walks of life can become Amateur radio (Two-way wireless)
operators. NIAR's programme will enable them access to over 30,000 HAMs in
every nook and corner of the world once they qualify a simple examination
and obtain a license from government.
Any one above the age of 12 years can be trained by NIAR so as to enable
them to appear for the Amateur Station Operator License Examination
conducted by Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing, Department of
Telecommunication (DoT), GOI.
State Relief Commissioner A K Singh stressed on the need for creating a pool
of trained human resource of HAM operators in the entire state so that their
expertise could be utilised during emergencies when other communication
systems are not available.
At the training programme at Awass Bandhu, Sanjay Bhoosreddy, special
secretary Housing suggested a network of 100 HAM stations to be set up in
Uttar Pradesh, which would be used for disaster management during
emergencies in the state.
