Might as well throw my '2d' worth in here.
Yes the bands were quite good. As has been said for non contest contacts
try the WARC's - always someone around, and certainly not run of the mill.
One wonders, if, reading the comments about wall-to-wall CQ's and
overdriven amps, whether this shows more about station limitations and
operating practices, having come, with respect, from a G1 who is probably
more used to the wide open spaces on 2m [even during a contest].
I, like many others run only a modest station on HF - No beams or amps
here - 100watts [on a good day] from a pair of 6146's feeding indoor
dipoles on 10/15 and 20 and what passes as a 'long wire' [80 feet at 9
feet agl] on the LF bands. Yet was able to winkle out quite a few
'goodies' on 20 and 15. 40 during daylight was 'ok' but pretty jammed full
during darkness.
Contests, especially the major ones, are a test of both equipment and to a
cetain extent operating skill, not counting a dash of luck. Don't give up,
just because you call that big signal twice and get no reply, learn 'how'
to get the contact, and to a certain extent hold your own with the 'big
boys' - many of which can be heard in the days before a major bash,
setting things up, and often afterwards.
Contesting is just another facet of Amateur Radio, and not to everyones
choice.
