Yet another Mercator projection trivia...
During the Cold War, the US Media were "discouraged" by the US Gov. from
ever showing a map of the world in anything but a Mercator projection. That's
the only projection were the USSR appears to have a significantly greater
land mass than the USA. Part of the bogeymanisation of the Soviets was the
reference to how big the country was already, and hence how big a threat it
was to the freedom loving citizens of America :-)
Still if you'd asked me I too would have answered that Korea was nearer to
Australia than Europe :-(
