Hi Ian and all,

A word about Uniden, they pioneered communications efectiveness by building a
better transceiver. Never mind the mouse trap. (;->) They came on the CB
scene late in the game, that is they joined the big American companies before
everybody went Japanese and a bit later CB went to the dogs. They pioneered
receiver noise reduction and transmitter speech processing, did a good job
too. I remember a couple of the first "export models" used by a couple of
locals when I lived up north, one was the best rig around and the other hated
its owner. He was an Israeli with an accent, perfectly understandable in
person but not so on the air. Strange, they were identical rigs so they
switched... no change. Conclusion: Uniden hated accents.

Just to clarify, the purpose of monitoring a "home frequency" or as you say
"breaking channel" has nothing to do with working DX, rather for listening
for local friends. Just like CB and the "home channel" if there was no one
around a quick call would determine if someone was listening or not. That is
our "10M CB" practice, using a 10M frequency for local chat. The other things
I mentioned are specifically aimed at working DX and are SOP. Like I said,
I'm one of the lone wolves who don't bother with the DX clusters, busting
through a dog pile is too much work and frustration.

Oh good grief, 20M. We have the California Kilowatt Curtain, trying tyo work
the Pacific from the Right Coast often proves futile. Even running full legal
1500W into a high gain antenna it's Mission impossible! Not exactly a
comforting thought but we get a bit of Chunga's Revenge with our Iron Curtain
of the East, they can't work Europe through us... heh heh heh.

Oh, recognize a stolen Zappa title in there? (;->)

Oh, before I get out of here I should mention the reason for mobile only
operation and QRM on the home front. When you have a hornet's nest of crappy
consumer digital noisemakers all around you no receiver in the world can hear
through the din. The only cure is distance, drive around and find a spot with
nothing nearby and you'll have peace and quiet. Sometimes not for long, if
you're spotted by one of those neighborhood eye spies who calls the cops for
every little thing you'll get rousted for being a suspicious person. HEY!
THIS IS A PUBLIC STREET AND I CAN PARK WHEREVER I WANT! Uh uh, don't make
trouble, keep the peace and find another spot, I did.
