Hi Kenwood Amateur radio owners,

My club the Auckland VHF Group inc. Branch #66 of NZART inc. owns two
Kenwood VHF/UHF radios.

They are TM221A (2m) & TM421A (70cm).

The difficulty of operation was that the manual the club has for the
radios is a Japanese language copy.

Most functions are easy to understand and use, VFO, Memory, repeater shift
and so on.

The difficulty is that after a "reset", I have found it hard to know how
to achieve the tuning in 25 kHz steps. The radio begins with 20 kHz tuning
steps. In ZL some channels end in .x50 kHz or .x25 kHz & .x75 kHz. The
text of the manual is "too hard" for me to read in this part of the
instructions.

My answer was to investigate www.mods.dk/ for an English language copy of
the manual.
I have success at download of a 1 Mb pdf of the TM221/321/421 instruction
book.

The "secret" to selecting the tuning steps is:
1). Place the radio in VFO mode.
2). Press M.IN then REV buttons.
3). Within 5 seconds turn the dial knob or use UP/DN button on the
microphone.
4). The display changes to show tuning step size, which can be changed by
Dial knob or UP/DN button on the microphone.
5). Return to normal receive mode by "press any key, except LOW or POWER
or DIAL knob.

The CTCSS Tone (when fitted) is selected in a similar fashion with M.IN
followed by TONE button. Then the display shows the selected TONE & it can
be "tuned" by DIAL know or UP/DN microphone button.

The SHIFT button is only for Repeater transmitter frequency operation and
has no "other functions" available. It is the M.IN button that enables
"other functions".
