Well, I have figured my problem out and am replying to my own message for the
sake of posterity :).
So, it turns out that I had a little wiring problem. I had bought the REAL
Garmin serial cable, not the one that doesn't have a connector on it, since
the "OEM" one was not available at the store where I got the cable. Well,
anyway, tricky as they are, in the "REAL" serial cable, (the one that actually
has a nine pin on it) the output line is greenish-yellow, and the input line
is white; HOWEVER, on the "OEM" cable, (without connector) the colors are
reversed. Since I read the schematic from the web, of course, it assumed that
I was using the OEM cable, hence, mixing up the colors. Well, I hope this
helps someone out there!

P.S. Yay for standards! We love them so much, in fact, that we have multiple.

Does anyone know if the KA-Node will work in a system using X1J4 Nodes and how
compatible it will be? Need to 'replace' a X1J4 node and have KA available but
hear the KA- is not fully compatible and may not handshake etc properly.
I haven't found a lot of info that points out the problems...if there are any.
Any info would be great.

Hello Jerry
Do yourelf a favor and get the KNET node chip and install it in your
Kantronics TNC. Different ones are available from Kantronics for the KPC-3,
KPC-3 Plus and KPC-9612. Converts your KPC product to a full routable node
that can replace the X1J4 node.
The KA-Node does not propagate itself into the Nodes Tables, does no nodes
broadcasts and is essentially half a node. You will have a break in the nodes
chain that means your network users will have to know the KA-Node Call in
order to connect through it as all the other NETROM, THENET and X1J4 nodes
will not be able to include it in their routing tables.

My KAM+ does not prompt me to "PRESS (*) TO SET BAUD RATE" which it is
supposed
to do on startup. Neither am I prompted to "ENTER YOUR CALLSIGN".
MYCALL works, so there is communication between the computer and radio, but
CONNECT xxxxx-1 does not work. The xmit led flashes
for a minute or so, then it disconnects. I am just trying to get into
the mailbox; I don't have a radio connected yet. How can I get into the
CALLSIGN routine?

Hello Ray, wath interface you ar in use for your tries? i have used C128 for
many years with Kantronics KPC4 & KAM.
The first is in this case to Know that your C128 have a
"user communications port"
working at TTL Level and non RS232 so, change the switch jumper mode
"RS232 to TTL" inside the TNC or it is necessary a level convertor to match
it.
The second questions is to establish the link from a terminal program on your
C128 and ....interface......... configured the link in terms of baud (ABAUD)
2400 baud is good for C128 and the handshaking line , details in the manual
installations of the products , you may have the operating conditions in the
severals mode as you want.
Excuse me if my info's is already know from you,
hope helpfull for you something of my answer,

Last evening I got my new KAM XL up and running. Checking the website I
noticed that there was an update available for the flash. I downloaded it,
followed the instructions and what happened? BIG MISTAKE! It does not work! I
cannot even get the old .hex file that is on the CD to reinstall. Both of them
tell me at 65536 that there is an error loading the file. Now my unit is down.
Has anyone been able to get the flash to load? If you did, how did you get it
to load without erroring out? Any assistance would be greatly appreceiated. I
don't want to begin feeling like I spent $400.00 for nothing!

Been there..done that..had to return my XL to Kantronics for the same
problem..Kam XL Flash Bios Wizard locks up and unable to communicate with the
TNC.
Now returned with the latest versions loaded. They said the Kam XL Flash Bios
Wizard has not been fully tested by them and recommends using Hperterminal for
downloads.
And as far as I know Kantronics does not read this list..only way to get their
attention is unfortunatly you have to call them on your 'dime' (no 800 number)

Had no problem at all using Hyperterm with NT4SP6a and NT5SP2. Don't have
NT5.1 or DOS-Windows to try.

An update to the XL Wizard has been posted to the CSS site at
http://www.cssincorp.com/pacterm. Go to the download page and you can download
version 1.01.
Kantronics should be putting a link to it on their site soon. This works
around the 65K problem (dealt with the slower speed of the TNC in flash mode).
