                SBTSR v0.20 beta - JVFAX with Sound Blaster

Overview
========

SBTSR allows you to receive and transmit FM-FAX, SSTV and AM-FAX
using only your Sound Blaster card ! All you need is a
Sound Blaster Pro and some wires to connect the card to your
transceiver.

FM-FAX (or just FAX) and SSTV can be found on all the HF bands from
amateur radio stations and from broadcasters. AM-FAX
is transmitted by the NOAA weather satellites (137 Mhz) and GOES
geostationary weather satellites (1691 Mhz). It is also a great
mode to transmit pictures on the VHF and UHF bands using
FM transmissions.

Hardware requirements
=====================

1. 80486DX2 or better.
2. Sound blaster Pro or better.

Installing
==========

The first thing you have to do is install JVFAX 7.0 or better.
It comes with good documentation so I assume you already
did it. Before you load JVFAX load my program, SBTSR.
After quiting JVFAX you can unload SBTSR from memory using
"SBTSR -u". I wrote a batch file that does that for me:

   RUN.BAT
   -=-=-=-

   SBTSR
   JVFAX
   SBTSR -u

You might want to add some command to control the Sound Blaster
mixer. Setting the input volume to high will seriously
damage the quality of picture received. When receiving
AM-FAX (from NOAA satellites usually) the AGC circuit
in the sound blaster should be turned off if possible.

Other parameters
================

You can transmit AM-FAX by using the "-a" parameter.
For reception in AM-FAX, in FAX mode, choose a mode
that uses AM or press D to select AM1.

Use -c24 or any other number if the picture is slanted.
This should correct the error in the clock.
Although I believe the program is already calibrated,
cards can have differences. If you see pictures slanted
begin either increasing or decreasing this value.
Good numbers to begin with are -c100 and -c-100.

If you want the program to automatically push PTT
use the -k3f8 parameter if you use COM1. For COM2
use -k2f8. The RTS line in the serial line is on whenever
transmitting. Connecting this line to the P.T.T. of the
transmitter using a simple interface like a transistor
saves you the need to press PTT.

The sound blaster settings are taken from the environment
settings so you don't have to change them usually.

Known Problems
==============

The clock sometimes runs too fast. It seems to be
necessary in SSTV mode; if your clock does not
run too fast in SSTV mode, try to change to WR120
mode and press the '5' key several times.

The Sound Blaster 16-bit card allows much better results
in AM mode. It is also more accurate so if you have
one, use it.
