Drayton Scout Group commenced in 1947 with Cub Scouts. Celebrating their
50th. Anniversary in 1997. At present Drayton Scout Group has around 100
male and female youth members and 12 leaders, with five sections: Joey
Scouts-6 and 7 years old, Cub Scouts-8 to 11 years old, Scouts- 11 to 14
1/2 years old, Venturer Scouts-14 1/2 to 18 years old and Rovers 18 to 26
years old.
Drayton Scout Group is one of the eighteen scout groups in the Eastern
Down District belonging to the Darling Downs Area of Queensland. Drayton
Scout Group is a popular Group with many youth transferring to our Group.
we are involved in many Area events haveing just completed in a District
activity called "Night Hawk" where Scouts and Venturers take part in a
night hike. There are two courses one for the Scouts and another for the
Venturers. It all takes place overnight. There are even bases which are
manned by Leaders and volunteers. Each group put in teams of 5 to 8 Scouts
and are given instructions using only a compass and torches they have to
hike to the next base and whilst at the base do an activity like, first
aide where there is a senora of injured people and the Scouts have to
administer first aide. The team are judged on the first aide knowledge,
co-operation between and in the team, leadership and initiative. Points
are awarded, the Scouts are given futrher instructions and hike to the
next base where another activity will be waiting for them, such as
Construction, quiz on Scouting, an initiative test, mapping. All this
takes around five hours to complete, walking from the headquarters around
to the seven bases and back to headquarters. This year there was two
thousand youth participating in "Night Hawk", Scout and Venturers
caming from all over southern Queensland to attend.
A similar event called "Swamp Rat" takes place in october, but the event
takes place on water, Instead of hiking the scouts and the Venturers use
canoes on a large dam {LAKE} outside of Inglewood not far from Toowoomba
The scouts do this activity during the day, using their compasses to
travel to the different bases and do similar activities like at Night
Hawk. The Venturers do the same course but at night haveing only the moon
as lighting. The leaders are able to do this activity as well but in the
dark.
Drayton Scouts and Venturers go camping, hiking, abseiling all the time.
Cub Scouts are very bust too. Takeing part in all cub activities,
earning their Bronze, Silver and Gold boomerang badges. During the months
of July and August the Cub Scouts have being making their own movie at the
hut, dressing as their favourite super heroes, watching movies and making
their own popcorn. Last night we all attended Scout Revue where youth
members from Joey's to Rovers perform song and dance, skits and jokes on
stage. This is an annual event with many months of practice. Fourteen
children from our group were involved in Scout Revue this year.
Joey Scouts this month have been useing their senses, doing programs on
their feet, hands, eyes and hiking around the neighbourhood finding and
answering questions as they go.
Fundraising is high on the agenda. Scouts are preparing to go to Sydney
for the Australian Jamboree in Sydney at Collingwood Park. Car washes and
sausage sizzles raising the most money. Well that is about it for now all
