This is the packet radio version of the latest JOTA circular.

Geneva, November 1997.
To: National JOTA Organizers (NJO's)
	International Commissioners
40th Jamboree-On-The-Air, 18 - 19 October 1997.

Dear colleagues,

This is a final reminder that the National JOTA Reports of the 40th JOTA
need to be received in Geneva by the 31st of December 1997.

National JOTA Reports.
National JOTA organizers are requested to send a report on the 40th
jubilee JOTA to the World Scout Bureau at this time. A report form for
the 40th JOTA has been enclosed with the JOTA circular of last August.
We are curious if scout stations in your
country were able to receive the AM historic transmission we made from
the World Bureau's station GB / HB9S from Reading in the UK. A
summary of your report will be published in the World JOTA Report.
We would very much appreciate it if you could send your report text in
English on a computer disk.
Alternatively, you may send your report via electronic mail directly to
the Bureau at: JOTA@world.scout.org. Please state clearly: JOTA report
and your country name.

World Scout Bureau jubilee JOTA station GB / HB9S in Reading.
The amateur radio station of the World Scout Bureau operated from Reading
in the UK for the 40th JOTA this year, being the guest of the 79th Reading
Scouts. It was set up at the very same place where 40 years
ago the 1st JOTA was held.
The station GB/HB9S was operated by the JOTA founder Les Mitchell G3BHK,
former World JOTA Organizer Len Jarrett VE3MYF who came over from Canada,
and an enthusiatic team consisting of Yves HB9AOF, Richard PA3BAR,
Jeff G3SDG, Alan G3WNS, John G4KGT, Geoff G4UEL, Ben G7WHO, and
Barbara G8AKU. The station crew installed antennas that were similar
to the ones used 40 years ago: two G5RV's and a dipole; just the radio
equipment was modern.
The consequetive days brought us many contacts with old and new friends,
among them Jasser with the Kuwait Scout Organization at 9K2BI, the USA
headquarter station K2BSA ("do you have McDonalds over there in the
UK?"....), two scout stations in Lebanon and scouts in Western Australia
at VK6SZ.
In total scouts in 40 different countries were contacted.
Several scouts from the 79th Reading and surrounding groups as well as
their parents visited us during the weekend. We had a display wall set
up, with JOTA info, courtesy of John G4KGT. A morse code game on a
PC provided for many hours of fun. A JOTA quiz was available and we
also collected all co-ordinates of the UK JOTA radio game and found
the solution of the picture. Well done UK JOTA team!
Not only were we active on the short wave bands, a local TV station walked
in with a camera; an interview with Richard and Les can be seen on the
regional TV after the weekend.
But there was more. Old memories were revived of past JOTA's and activities.
Les vividly remembered how he managed to get the UK Army to cooperate with
the Royal Marine Corps to set up a scout radio station at Brownsea Island
in 1967. This station made daily contacts with the World Jamboree station
K7WSJ in Idaho. Les even had a BBC engineer design and construct a special
antenna for them. This antenna beamed their signal in just two hops to
Idaho, producing a sound contact every day. During a first try-out, their
signal "landed" just 12 miles away from the Jamboree. Les: "we've just
misted it...".

More details, historic material and photographs in the upcoming
World JOTA Report, due in March 1998.

Yours Sincerely,

Richard Middelkoop, PA3BAR

Don't forget: we need your national JOTA Report by 31 December 1997.
We count on you.
