IRTS delegation received by President McAleese
On Wednesday last November 15th a delegation from IRTS was received by
President McAleese at Arus an Uachtaran. The delegation consisted of IRTS
President Finbarr EI1CS, Vice President Paul Martin EI2CA, committee
member Paul O'Kane EI5DI, Gerard Gervin EI8CC, Joseph Deery EI4JA (who is
a young white stick operator) and two sponsors of next year's CQIR event.
The group outlined to the President some of the plans for next years
Jubilee celebrations. She was particularly interested to hear that it is
hoped to site the HQ station for the CQIR event in the environs of the
Arus, and to have it manned by young operators. If circumstances permit
she would like to visit the station and she recognised the role that
amateur radio could play in the gaisce awards scheme. She wished the
society well for the year ahead and particularly hoped that the CQIR would
be a great success in uniting the "irish diaspora" with the homeland.
On behalf of the Society Finbarr thanked the President for receiving the
group and entertaining them to tea. He presented her with an engraved
plate in Dublin Crystal containing the name of the Society, its logo, and
the years 1932 to 2007.

IOTA Results
Final results for the 2006 IOTA Contest have now been published on the
IOTA Contest web site. Results for EI and EJ stations are summarised on
the contest Results page of the IRTS web site, which also includes a link
to the IOTA Contest web site. As a matter of interest, the contest
database contains details of over 440,000 QSOs made during the contest,
allowing the adjudicators to cross-check two-thirds of all QSOs.

AREN News
Three AREN delegates EI7IG, EI4JN and EI2JB recently attended a course on
Field Search Skills hosted by the South East Mountain Rescue Association.
The 2 days of instruction included both classroom tuition and practical
exercises held in the Commeragh mountains. This included a night exercise
on the Saturday night. Other professional and volunteer organisations
represented included the Garda Siochana, the Coastguard, the Civil Defence
and SEMRA.
While ARENs involvement in missing person search operations will
principally be of a communications nature, it is important for members to
be cognisant of the methods used and the challenges faced by the search
teams. For this purpose, a training module 'AREN and SAR' will be
delivered to members in the near future.
The IARU Region One, First EmCom party on the Air is taking place this
weekend. Only Headquarter stations of each countries' Emergency
Communications Organisations are invited to take part. Dave EI4BZ operated
the IRTS AREN station.
Also this weekend, 3 more AREN members will be joining The South Eastern
Mountain Rescue Association on a training weekend. There will be plenty
APRS activity in the Galtee Mountains. Some activity on the 40 metre and
80 metre AREN frequencies is also to be expected.

CQ World Wide CW Contest
The CQ World Wide CW Contest, the biggest CW event of the year, will take
place next weekend. It runs for 48 hours from midnight Friday to midnight
Sunday. Ten EI stations were listed in the results from last year and we
look forward to an even bigger participation this year.
Wieslaw SP4Z will again travel from Poland to participate in the CQWW CW
from Ireland in the Single Operator All Band Low Power category as
EI/SP4Z. He will use IC7000 + rotary Spiderbeam, Inverted VEE and a
dipole. SP4Z also operated from Maynooth two years ago and in the process
set a new EI record for a Low Power All Band entry. This record still
stands. This was a great achievement as he brought his complete station,
including aerial supports, on the airplane from Poland. On that occasion
he made 1,785 QSOs in 91 Zones and 339 DXCC entities.
