IRTS Contests

In 2007, IRTS will be sponsoring 7 contests, starting with the 80 metres 
Counties Contest on the 1st of January, and concluding with the special 
CQIR - Ireland Calling Contest on the 29th and 30th of September.  

The full IRTS Contest Calendar for 2007, along with the Rules of each 
contest, are now on the "Contests" page of the IRTS web site, at 
www.irts.ie.  Participating in contests is a great way to improve your 
operating skills, including operation under field day conditions, and to 
work those rare counties.

Slide Rule and Abacus Exhibition at ILAC Central Library.

An exhibition of non-electronic methods of calculation will be on view at 
the ILAC Library, Henry Street Dublin until the 28th of October 2006.

The exhibits will include the following:-  Slide Rules of various types 
old and 'new' invented in 1620 by Edmond Gunter, based on the invention of 
Logarithms by John Napier in 1614.  Abacuses including some examples of 
Chinese and Japanese types.  A set of 'Napier's bones' Calculating rods, 
so called because the were usually made of bone or ivory designed to be 
used for a lifetime.  Mechanical calculators with manual 'carry' and 
automatic 'carry' and a sample of the Hewlett Packard model HP25 pocket 
Scientific Calculator which 'killed off' the Slide Rule after 350 years of 
use.

The exhibition is supported by a web site, where further information can 
be obtained about the collection, together with links to other web sites 
of similar interest.     The site can be found at 
homepage.eircom.net/~sliderules/.

The Exhibition is for historic and educational purposes only, and is free 
of charge.  You do not need to have any mathematical knowledge to view the 
exhibition. Why not drop by and have a look!  The Collection is privately 
owned by Liam, EI9DVB.

Tipperary Amateur Radio Group

The October meeting of the Tipperary Amateur Radio Group will take place 
on Thursday next the 5th of October in Raheen House Hotel, Clonmel.  All 
are welcome.

South Dublin Radio Club

South Dublin Radio Club and amateur radio in general got a good publicity 
boost last week through an article in "Southside", which is distributed 
free to all households in the south of Dublin city.  The magazine ran an 
article about the club's activities.  The article explained the benefits 
of amateur radio and also publicised SDR's theory classes.

South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

A committee meeting of South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will take place 
this coming Wednesday, the 4th of October.  All committee members are asked 
to attend.

Kerry Amateur Radio Group AGM

The third AGM of the Kerry Amateur Radio Group will be held on Saturday 
the 7th of October 2006 at the Muckross House Coffee Shop in Killarney at 
10 a.m. sharp.  No officer's posts were contested in the recent request 
for nominations so the incumbents will be deemed to be re-elected unless 
other nominations are received, on the day and prior to the start of the 
AGM.  

Current incumbents are:  EI2JP is Chairman and Treasurer, EI9ESB is Vice 
Chairman and the position of Hon. Secretary is held by EI7CQB.

A planning session will be held after the election to discuss plans for 
the club during the 2006-2007 year.  This is your opportunity to set the 
agenda for the coming year and all club members are requested to attend 
and bring constructive ideas to guide the direction of the club in the New 
Year.

Members are also reminded that memberships are due for renewal on the 1st 
of October.  Those members who haven't renewed their membership for the 
2006-2007 year are asked to now forward their subscription to EI2JP at 
QTHR.

Mayo Rally

The Mayo Rally will take place on Sunday the 26th of November 11:00 a.m. in 
the Belmont Hotel, Knock.  Special rates are available for those wishing 
to stay overnight.  Bed and Breakfast is 50 Euro per person sharing or 70 
Euro with evening meal.

Theory Classes

Theory classes for the Experimenters Radio Licence will be starting 
Shortly in Garbally Collage, Ballinasloe and interested parties should 
contact Noel EI6HW by e-mail at "nfmulvihill at eircom dot net".

Classes in Waterford commenced on Tuesday last the 26th of September at 
7.30 p.m. in the Roanmore Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford. 

Classes are continuing with SDR every Tuesday between 8.00 p.m. and 10.00 
p.m. in the Marian Community Centre, Marian Road, Tempelogue.

Mayo AGM

The ninth AGM of the Mayo Radio Experimenters Network will be held in 
Stensons of Ballyvary (on the N5) on Wednesday October the 4th at 9 p.m.   
The group will be looking for a new Chairperson; Jimmy Kelly EI2GCB, 
having served the maximum three-year term will be standing down. In 
February 2007 the Mayo Radio Experimenters Network will be ten years old 
and plans are underway to mark the event.  At the October meeting good 
wishes for a speedy recovery were extended to Michael Clarke EI3IG and 
Willie Long EI6AI - both of whom were ill recently.

Several members of the MREN travelled to the Leicester Rally in the UK 
Midlands, enjoying the fine weather and car racing at Donnington Park as 
added attractions.

Waterford Rally

The Waterford Rally will take place on Sunday the 15th of October 2006.  
This year the rally will take place in The Woodlands Hotel on the Dunmore 
Road in Waterford City. 

South East Communications from Waterford and Long Communications from 
Donegal have confirmed their attendance at the rally.   The Irish Radio 
Transmitters Society and AREN will also be a welcome presence and the 
'Bring and Buy' will also be available.

Jamboree On The Air

The 49th JOTA will take place during the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of 
October 2006. Each year over 500,000 Scouts and Guides from all over the 
world participate in this event where Scouting experiences are shared and 
ideas exchanged thus contributing to the world brotherhood of Scouting. 
While the event lasts from midnight local time Friday night to midnight 
Sunday night, Stations participating can choose their own operating hours. 

Further information including training material can be obtained from Sean 
EI3IP, Scouting Ireland National JOTA Organiser be emailing jota at scouts 
dot ie. Training material can be downloaded from the Scouting Ireland 
Radio Scouting Web page at www.scouts.ie/international/jota.  Details of 
participating Groups will follow.
