The Romans did have a word for trousers, 'brachae' but it was considered
lower class to wear them, in fact one of the words for the inferior types
they conquered was 'brachati', lit; 'trousered ones.' We brits were in
that category. Barbarians.
The better classes, i.e. Romans, wore tunics and, if they were senators
and aristocracy, togas.
I can't help thinking that it couldn't have been much fun in the 'Armpit
of the empire' which was what they called the island where, according to
Tacitus, it was always raining.
I have often wonderd what they thought of the Scots.
Perhaps that's why they built that wall. To avoid competition.
There was something else the Romans, like the Scots, didn't wear either.
You can imagin the Legionaries and the Scots mooning each other off
hadrian's wall,Hi!
